A. There are too many variables for anyone to answer this one. If you are taking over an established business than anything from 50,000 - 5000.000 If you are starting one and you already have premises then it would depend on what you are going to stock, how much there would be etc etc Again - anything from 50-500k

Has anyone seen this great new virtual newsagent shop window?
Q. There's a great new website in London called www.cardsinthewindow.com. Its basically a virtual newsagents shop window where you can place virtual advertisements in the windows. There's a 'for sale' window and also a 'local services' window. Only covers SW London and is quite new, but I think they're planning to franchise out in the future, so could be the next Gumtree. What do you think?
Asked by lyn snudden - Fri Apr 17 05:54:47 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I think it is a good idea, but because other big websites already do something close to it, getting a market share will be extremely difficult, but I'm not saying it's not worth trying it. It looks good.

The manager of a newsagent ordered 70 copies of XYZ magazine?
Q. s of these were charged at 95p each and the remainder, d, were charged at a discounted price of 85p each. The bill for all 70 copies was 62.00. How many magazines were charged at the discounted price? Solve using simultaneous equations.
Asked by loveben66 - Tue Dec 15 02:56:53 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. s + d = 70 .95s + .85d = 62 multiply first equation by .95, then sebtract 2nd equation to eliminate s: .95s + .95d = 66.5 - (.95s + .85d = 62) --- .10d = 4.5 d = 4.5/0.1 d = 45 s + d = 70 s + 45 = 70 s = 70 - 45 s = 25 25 copies were charged at 95p and 45 copies were charged at 85p

How much does a typical Newsagent owner earn?
Q. In the UK, either a franchise or private

A. That depends on the type of shop, location, foot-fall from passing traffic and what the nearby shops are. My father owned a newsagents that was right next to a tube and mainline station in London so he got a lot of commuters walking past and there were many times where people were queueing to get their papers, ciggys, sweets etc. At other times of the day it was very quiet although people still came in for ciggys, greeting cards and all the other odd bits and pieces that he sold. I remember that (and this was a few years ago so may have changed) he used to earn about 1p for every paper that he sold, mind you he used to sell an awful lot of papers there was more profit in sweets and cards on a per unit basis but not so many unit sales of… [cont.]

A. Newsagent means a shop that sells newspapers. They usually sell other things as well, like sweets and ice-cream, lighters and cigarettes and sometimes a small amount of stationery. A stationers is a shop dedicated to selling stationery, paper, pencils, pens, files etc. They do not sell sweets and newspapers or cigarettes.

A. I guess you mean currency exchange services. If that is the case, then naturally, you need to look at local competition plus potential clients. Are there enough people around who ask for that service? if so, how about the competition? is there any "big business" around offering the same service? if so, then don't bother. If not, then go ahead. Cheers, -Max

Where can I buy a zippo flint in England?
Q. I live in Swindon, England and own a zippo. My flint is almost completely worn and I need to buy a new one. Where can I do this, can I go to Asda, or Tesco's, for example? Or just a newsagents? It seems to me that just a normal newsagent wouldn't sell a rather specialised product like a zippo flint.

A. I always just tear up old disposable lighters and take the flint. It has a spring under them so be careful that it does not fly away on you. Just pick up old Bic lighters from the street in your travels. Haven't bought a flint in years. Zippo has an incredible lifetime warranty and they even return it free with spare flints - I wish more businesses would learn from them

A. There are already services like this, usually called "Western Union", but in today's world of Online Banking, wire transfers, and Internet Services like Pay Pal, I am not sure one more would be that beneficial, although, in certain markets the name MoneyGram may be significant. You really need to test the area (s) that you are interested in and see what the people think. A marketing research is likely a good tool to use for this.
