How many bowel movements should a person have who is on a diet colon cleanse?
Q. I have conflicting information as to how many bowl movements is good or normal. What is the normal amount for a person with a healthy cleansed colon or is on a regular colon cleanse regiment? Please site your source for the answer to this question. Thanks!

A. It's basically impossible to predict. Many of these 'cleansing' procedures are not particularly healthy - in addition to having no actual health benefits. For some people it is normal to have a bowel movement only two times a week, for others, daily. Either is completely normal, and there's nothing pathological about either. Many 'cleansing' regimens severely disrupt the internal flora and absorption processes of the GI tract. This can result in a slowing of bowel movements and constipation all the way to constant runny diarrhea. That's of course for those regimens that actually do anything to the GI system at all. Basically, it's impossible to gauge health or normalcy from bowel movements. There's a huge range, and despite what the… [cont.]

Is it possible to track the movements of bacteria within a large living animal?
Q. For an enteric bacterium, would it be possible to track the movements of the bacterium within the living host, without detrimental effects to the host? This has been done with mice and Salmonella before: does anyone have a reference for this? Could you label the bacteria with something that could be tracked through the host?

A. The experiment you are talking about with the salmonella was done using lux, an enzyme which produces luminescence. Genes for lux or luc are inserted into plasmids which are then transferred into the bacterium. See references below. (BTW, try using google scholar advanced search for this kind of thing, its tops)

What movements did you feel in your tummy between 4 and 5 months?
Q. I'm almost 5 months and sort of feel movements already, early on it was like popping bubbles and now I feel something stronger doing small flips or pushes..what is yours like?

A. When I was pregnant with my first, at 20 weeks I could lay down on my back and you could actually see the baby doing somersaults. (I was super skinny back then!) He would move from one side to the other over and over again. It was wild! I'm now about 17 weeks with my 5th and have felt a few little kicks and "bubbles popping" as you put it, but nothing major and not regularly. Still. I love it when I do happen to feel the movements and look forward to feeling them regularly in a few weeks.
