Most foreign exchange trading firms are market makers and so are many banks, although not in all currency markets. In foreign exchange (or FX) trading, where most deals are conducted over-the-counter and are, therefore, completely virtual, the market maker sells to and buys from its clients and is compensated by means of price differentials and for the service of providing liquidity, reducing transaction costs and facilitating trade. Recent developments in the over-the-counter FX market have permitted even buy-side (non bank participants) virtually to act as market-makers through the advent of high speed/frequency software engines that submit bids and offers outside prices available on other networks or ECN (electronic communication networks) where FX is traded.

In stock exchange

Most stock exchanges operate on a "matched bargain" or "order driven" basis. In such a system there are no designated or official market makers, but market makers nevertheless exist. When a buyer's bid price meets a seller's offer price or vice versa, the stock exchange's matching system decides that a deal has been executed.

Q. What is the role of a market maker? how do the make their money? and what makes a good one?

A. The role of a market maker is to provide liquidity to the stock they are making the market. They make money from the difference between the bid and ask spread. For example, the market maker can be selling MSFT at 22 1/8 ASK and buying it at 22 BID. I guess what makes a good one is at the end of the day the one makes the most trades with less inventory as possible will come out making the most at the end of the day.

How do "market makers" benefit from keeping the price of a security low?
Q. Why do market makers deliberately keep the price per share of a security low? Is this done to attract buyers and maximize profit? Wouldn't they make the same amount of profit if the bid/ask prices increased.

A. They don't. Where did you get this idea? Market makers make their money by picking up the bid-asked spread. The level of the stock price is irrelevant.

A.
